    • Sisters vs. Nuns

Sisters have active apostolates, meaning they are visible in the world and live as spiritual mothers in capacities such as teaching, serving as physicians, working as diocesan canon lawyers, serving the poor, etc. Orders include some Dominicans, Sisters of Mercy, some Franciscans, and others. Nuns are cloistered, meaning their lives of prayer (for the Church, priests, etc.) are hidden from the world. Orders of cloistered nuns include Benedictines, Carmelites, cloistered Dominicans, and others. Both sisters and nuns live in community.
