Below are links to Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) that are up for review for adaption to the Diocese of Kalamazoo science curriculum by the diocesan-wide curriculum team starting in the fall of 2015 with implementation the fall of 2016.
Thank you to Father Christopher Ankley for taking the time to carefully review these standards for any contradictions to our faith. Fr. Ankley stated, "I didn't find anything against the faith but I think teachers need to remind students that there is a difference between the scientific method and theology. Theology is faith seeking understanding about God while the scientific method (argument from evidence) is used to make discoveries about earth. Heaven is outside space and time, scientific method is not applicable. Also, teachers need to remind students that there is no conflict between faith and reason. The two are completely compatible; truth is always compatible with truth. Theology doesn't make claims about scientific research, other than to say it makes sense of God's creation, so the scientists shouldn't make theological claims, based on their scientific research. Its outside their area of expertise."
Please take a moment to review these standards and provide the curriculum team feedback as we move forward with updating our science curriculum. Please submit your comments to Dr. Terry Nugent (tnugent@diokzoo.org).
